Do you remember that I’ve been to Amsterdam before? I miss it so much. One of the best things about writing a blog is that it lets me remind myself of all the places I’ve been. So today, let’s talk about Amsterdam!
I still remember that on my way to the city, it was raining in the morning, but the rain stopped when I arrived (thank God!). My friend said I was very lucky (haha). She came to the railway station to meet me. Wow, I was so happy to see her again after a year! So many things happened, I swear.
Hangout in the City
We finally met up after a year! She picked me up at the train station, which was so nice of her. She even brought me some local food and an umbrella.
She showed me around the whole city. We went on a canal boat ride, and I loved it so much. The weather was beautiful, and I could see the gorgeous city views all around me—it was such a good idea.
After the canal boat tour, we decided to walk around. We wandered everywhere (honestly, half the time I didn’t even know where I was, haha). I never thought I could go a whole day without resting—but maybe I was just too excited because I never imagined I’d get to travel to Europe.
Having the Famous Food in the City
It was one of the best, most relaxing days. We tried a famous snack in town, even though there was a long line. We waited for a while and finally got our food—and believe me, it was so worth it!
Later, we stopped at a café for a nice drink and did some people-watching. We talked a lot. It felt like such a perfect, carefree day. I wished every day could be like that.
When I wanted to take photos, I met a guy who I couldn’t tell was a tourist or a local. I was waiting in line to get a landscape shot, but there were so many people trying to take photos too. He jokingly asked the crowd to move out of the way so I could take my picture—it was pretty funny (though I didn’t want to get into trouble, haha).
After that, we met some other tourists who asked us to take photos for them, and they took some photos for us too.
Visit Red Light District
Next, we went into the Red Light District, and my friend explained everything to me. It was fascinating because I’d never been there and didn’t know much about it. There were lots of bars and cafés, and I even found a Chinese restaurant. (When I’m in Europe, I really miss home-cooked food!)
By then, the day was almost over, and I was ready to rest and go back to the dormitory.
Explore Market and Local Café
The next day, I explored the city again on my own because my friend had to work. I had breakfast somewhere and then went to a local café. I was so happy because there weren’t many people early in the morning, and I was the first to go in. But within minutes, it got crowded.
I also met a Korean traveler who asked me if I was there for class. (It’s not the first time someone has asked me that!) He was traveling from London to Poland. Do I really look like a student? Haha. They were very friendly, though my friends always warn me: “Don’t talk to strangers!” But they seemed nice. (Don’t worry—I’m careful!)
After breakfast, I started a new day of exploring. I found a beautiful market, and wow—it was amazing. There was so much food, and I was so happy to see it all! They had lots of cheese, and it tasted great. I kept walking around, feeling safe and welcomed. People were happy to talk to me and help me, even if I didn’t ask for help.
After walking for a while, I felt hungry again. I swear it was the best toast I’ve ever had—it was absolutely delicious! If I ever go back, I’d definitely go there again to try that toast. Everyone should try it!
Late Night Walk with Jer
When I went out with Jer, we also enjoyed the night views. The city looked beautiful at night, and there weren’t many people around. Sometimes, I was the only one walking in the streets—but it felt very safe!
The streets at night can get a bit chaotic, so you should be careful if you’re alone.
In my eyes, the Netherlands has some of the most beautiful city views at night. Many people say not to walk around alone late at night, but I guess I’m just a bit rebellious. At 3 a.m., my friends and I were still wandering the streets, enjoying the beautiful night scenery and delicious late-night snacks. Those moments became some of my best memories.

💳 Money & Payments
- Go Cashless: Amsterdam is very card-friendly. Most places accept debit/credit cards, but carry a small amount of cash just in case.
- Avoid Foreign Transaction Fees: Use a card with no foreign transaction fees, or withdraw a bit of cash at ATMs.
💼 Packing Tips
- Weather Changes Fast: Bring layers, even in summer. A rain jacket or small umbrella is smart.
- Comfortable Shoes: You’ll walk a lot on cobblestones. Stylish sneakers are perfect.

🚌 Get Around Cheaply
- Walk or Bike: Amsterdam is compact. Walking saves money, but be cautious biking if you’re not confident in city traffic.
- Public Transport Passes: A GVB day pass (~€9) can be cheaper than single tickets if you travel a lot in one day.
- Skip Taxis: They’re expensive. Use trams, buses, or metro.
