Hello and welcome back to another hotel post from my China trip!
Today I’m sharing my experience staying at Preferred Convenience Hotel in Guangzhou, a budget-friendly stay located near the metro. All of my accommodations during this trip were budget hotels, and each one was in a different area. This is the first review from that series.
First Impressions
We arrived in China around 11 PM, and honestly, we were exhausted. Everything was dark and quiet by the time we reached the hotel. It took about 45 minutes from the airport to get there, and since it was already late, most shops nearby were closed.
We headed straight to check in. The process was quick, and we finally got into our room to rest — which was exactly what we needed after a long travel day.
The next morning felt completely different. There was a local morning market nearby with many small shops, food stalls, and even local banks. It takes about 3 minutes by bus to reach the market area and more than 10 minutes to walk to the subway station. I think it might be around 15 minutes on foot — maybe we just took the wrong direction too many times (which is very possible!).
This hotel is probably where I walked the most during the trip. Sometimes we took Didi because it was simply too tiring — especially after walking the entire day.
Location
To be honest, I chose this hotel randomly because I saw it was relatively close to Foshan. Even my local friends said it was a good choice. Later, I realized that my second hotel wasn’t far from Foshan either — especially if you use the subway system.
I visited Foshan twice from two different hotel locations, and the time difference was only about one hour (if I remember correctly). So honestly, Guangzhou’s subway makes it easy to travel anywhere.
Klook.comOne thing I really enjoyed was exploring the local morning market. I personally prefer morning markets over supermarkets. Even though there’s no air-conditioning, it feels more authentic and gives you a better understanding of local life.
We also tried the famous local “herbal tea.” To be honest, it tasted more like bitter tea — but it wasn’t as bitter as I expected! Maybe because I like bitter melon, I found it acceptable. The shop owner even gave us something called “Chen Pimei” to go with it, which I really enjoyed.

The Room
The room was quite clean and reasonably spacious — especially compared to my second hotel.
However… it was my first time encountering a cockroach in a hotel room. At first, it didn’t move, so I thought it was dead. But it wasn’t. It was just… very still. I’m not extremely afraid of cockroaches if they don’t move, so I tried to ignore it.
I informed the front desk, but they couldn’t change my room because there were no available rooms at that time. Surprisingly, about two days later, the cockroach disappeared on its own.
Other than that incident, everything else was fine.
Klook.comThe TV worked normally, so I could watch local news. There was a table and chair, which I really appreciated because sometimes I need to sit down and cool off before showering. You know that feeling when you’re sweating and lying directly on the bed? It’s not pleasant at all.
The shower area was clean and stocked with toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, and other basic amenities. Housekeeping refreshed items daily.
One thing I really liked: the washing machine was free to use and available 24 hours a day. That was super convenient, especially during a longer trip.

Check-In Process & Breakfast
Even though we arrived late at night, the check-in process was smooth. We just needed to show our passports and documents. It took about 10 minutes.
Breakfast was included and served on the same floor as our room from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
The breakfast was simple Chinese-style food. I actually liked it because the flavors were light and comforting. Fried noodles and porridge were my usual choices. The hot dogs were surprisingly popular — but mostly taken by kids!
Waking up early was a bit painful, though.

Overall Thoughts
Overall, this stay was good for the price.
Yes, I was slightly disappointed that they couldn’t change my room after the cockroach incident. But besides that, the experience was comfortable enough for a budget hotel.
One thing that really impressed me was how convenient deliveries are in China. You can order from Meituan, Taobao, or Pinduoduo, and the hotel will help receive your packages. Meituan food delivery can even be sent directly to your room — which is honestly a lazy traveler’s dream.
I kind of wish Malaysia had this system!
Klook.comIf you’re looking for an affordable stay in Guangzhou and don’t mind walking a little to the subway, this hotel could be a good option. The price is reasonable, breakfast is included, and the area feels local and authentic.
Just maybe double-check your walking directions.
