Hello and welcome back! This is my final blog post from my Guangzhou trip (Maybe), and I thought it would be helpful to share exactly how much I spent during my six days in China. Before travelling, almost everyone told me that Guangzhou was affordable. They were rightโbut I wanted to know justย howย affordable it really was.So in this post, I’m sharing my complete travel budget, including flights, hotels, food, and transportation. Hopefully, it will help anyone planning their first trip to Guangzhou.

| Category | Cost (RM) |
|---|---|
| Flight | RM683.32 |
| Hotel (6 Nights) | RM499.55 |
| Food | RM250 |
| Transportation | RM150 |
| Total | RM1,582.87 |
For less thanย RM1,600, I enjoyed six days exploring Guangzhou while eating plenty of local food and staying in comfortable hotels.
Flight Ticket
The biggest expense of my trip was definitely the flight.
I booked a promotional fare with China Southern Airlines, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the deal. The return ticket included:
- Direct flights
- Checked baggage
- Meals onboard
Considering everything that was included, I thought it was excellent value.
I hesitated before booking because I kept wondering if the price might drop even further. Thankfully, I decided to buy it before the promotion ended. Looking back, it was definitely the right decisionโeven my friend, who is really good at finding cheap flights, agreed that it was a great deal.

Hotel
Because it was my first time visiting Guangzhou, I knew I wouldn’t spend much time inside the hotel. My priority was simple:
Find somewhere clean, convenient, and affordable.
I ended up staying in two different hotels.
Preferred Convenience Hotel
3 Nights โ RM286.39
This was actually my favourite stay. The location was convenient, and overall it suited my travel style much better.
Yifang Hotel
3 Nights โ RM213.16
The hotel was decent for the price, although I wasn’t a fan of the bathroom layout because there wasn’t a proper shower door.
One thing I learned from this trip is that hotel location matters more than I expected.
Next time, I would stay somewhere around Beijing Road because that’s where I spent most of my time. Being closer would save both transportation costs and travelling time.
Total hotel cost: RM499.55
I think staying six nights for under RM500 was excellent value.

Total the hotel is about RM499.55 is just below on RM500 for both hotel. I think this also the best part on my budget.

Food
If I’m being honest…
The main reason I wanted to visit Guangzhou was the food. I absolutely love Chinese cuisine (just not spicy food), and Guangzhou has so many delicious local dishes that I wanted to try.
Some of my favourites included:

Because I travelled with friends, we usually shared meals, which helped us try more dishes without wasting food. Even after six days, I still left feeling like there were dozens of restaurants I hadn’t managed to visit. That’s probably the biggest reason I want to return someday.
Total food cost: RM250
Honestly, I think that’s incredibly affordable considering how much we ate.
Klook.comTransport
Transportation was probably the only part of the trip that didn’t go perfectly.
On our first night, we unfortunately got overcharged by an airport taxi driver. The journey took around 45 minutes, but we ended up paying almostย RM200, which was far more than it should have cost. If you’re visiting Guangzhou for the first time, my advice is simple: Use Didi whenever possible instead of taking random taxis from the airport.
After that experience, we mainly used:
- Didi
- Metro
- Walking
Walking around Guangzhou was actually very enjoyable because the weather during our visit was cool.
One interesting thing I noticed was that many Didi drivers didn’t switch on the air conditioning, even on warmer days. It wasn’t a huge issue, but it was something I wasn’t expecting.
Thankfully, most of our drivers were friendly. One driver from Sichuan even spent the whole journey recommending local food and sharing stories about Guangzhou’s history. Encounters like that always become some of my favourite travel memories.
Transportation cost:ย RM150

Was Guangzhou Expensive?
Not at all.
Compared with many other destinations, I found Guangzhou surprisingly affordable.
Accommodation was inexpensive, local food was delicious without being expensive, and public transportation made it easy to get around. The only unexpected expense was the airport taxi on our first night. Without that, I probably could have spent even less.
My Total Guangzhou Budget
Here’s my final spending breakdown:
- โ๏ธ Flight:ย RM683.32
- ๐จ Hotel:ย RM499.55
- ๐ Food:ย RM250
- ๐ Transportation:ย RM150
Total Trip Cost
RM1,582.87 per person
For six days of travelling, eating local food, exploring the city, and staying in hotels, I think this was excellent value.
I didn’t spend much on shoppingโjust a couple of refrigerator magnets as souvenirs. Time went by so quickly that I kept telling myself, “I’ll buy it tomorrow,” and before I knew it, it was my last day.
Maybe that’s just how I travel! Even so, I left Guangzhou with wonderful memories, plenty of great meals, and lots of reasons to come back again.

Final Thoughts
Guangzhou turned out to be even more affordable than I expected. If you’re planning your first trip to China and wondering whether Guangzhou fits a budget, I’d definitely say yes.
With careful planning, it’s entirely possible to enjoy six memorable days without spending a fortune. I already know I’ll be back somedayโmainly because there are still so many restaurants I haven’t tried.
